Invisible Witness, Visible Saint: Women, the Spirit, and the Law in American Fictions
This study traces the literary history of the 'American Jezebel,' a figure of female lawlessness, from the cautionary tales of the seventeenth century Anne Hutchinson through Stowe's recreation of her as sentimental heroine.
