HDS 1110
History of the Religion of Ancient Israel
Peter Machinist
Description
The study of ancient Israelite religion and culture in comparative historical context. Topics to be examined include conceptions of divinity, prophecy, law, kingship, and cult. Through such topics the aim is to see how Israel related to other cultures of the ancient Near East, and thus, of what value the study of other cultures has in understanding the character of Israelite religion itself. Some acquaintance with Hebrew Bible and the history of ancient Israel is helpful, but not required.
