HDS 1887
The New Testament, Biblical Studies, and Empire: Seminar
Laura S. Nasrallah
Description
This course focuses on the intersection of the New Testament and postcolonial criticisms. We shall study not only the Roman imperial context in which the New Testament and early Christian texts were written, but also nineteenth- and twentieth-century approaches to the Bible, and the way in which their sometimes orientalizing enterprises constructed the field of biblical studies. Special attention will be paid to biblical archaeology, to art history and renditions of the Holy Land, to quests for the historical Jesus, and to the academic institutionalization of biblical studies.
