Women, Folklore, and Afro-Atlantic Religion

Description

This course introduces students to the ritual and philosophical foundations of women's roles in Yoruba-derived religious culture found in Nigeria, Cuba, Brazil, Haiti, and the United States. We use an interdisciplinary perspective that focuses on women's vernacular culture in a range of genres. Readings and films include works by Sanford, Cabrera, Landes, Matory, Hurston, Ayorinde, Cros Sandoval, and Deren.
