HDS 2103
Religion, Secularism, Feminism
Lucinda Ramberg
Description
After reading classic texts in the anthropology and history of religion, this course considers the claim by Talal Asad, Dipesh Chakrabarty and Richard King that 'religion' as a cross cultural trans-historical category universalizes specifically European and Christian conceptions of the human, secular time and liberal politics. We will examine recent ethnographies as possible interpretations of the present that do not ground themselves in the presumption of rationalism and secularity as the proper political teleology of modernity and feminist emancipation. Throughout the course we will attend to questions of gender, subjectivity and the body
