Susan Crawford Sullivan
Description
This course analyzes the relationship between gender, poverty, and religion. Beginning with social science explanations of the causes and consequences of the "feminization of poverty" both in the United States and globally, the course then considers the challenge of women's poverty to religion and the role that religion plays in the lives of poor women. Readings include relevant literature in sociology and psychology of religion, religion and health, the African American church, and religion and public policy. Participants will engage in a relevant community-based learning project.
