HDS 2395
Christian Ethics and Ritual
Mark D. Jordan
Description
Some Christian ethicists have recently turned back to liturgy and sacraments in their explanations of moral education or formation. This is indeed a turn back so far as the oldest Christian accounts emphasize the connection between ritual and character--indeed, offer moral justifications for the practice of certain rituals. At the same time, some Christian liturgists have tried to sharpen liturgy's ethical consequences--both by disrupting ritual complacencies and by refusing boundaries between ritual and world. This seminar brings together these preoccupations by juxtaposing classic theological accounts of the sacraments with recent studies of ritual efficacy.
