Literature and the Pastoral Imagination: Seminar

Description

This course will focus on the pastoral/religious imagination as it is reflected in and shaped by literature. Special attention will be given to issues of sublimity, mortality and death, the attempt to say the unsayable, and the creativity required by the pastoral life and the religious life generally. Course texts will include Longinus's \On the Sublime/, the poetry and prose of George Herbert, Mark Doty's \Atlantis/, Virginia Woolf's \To the Lighthouse/, Toni Morrison's \Paradise/, and Fanny Howe's \Indivisible/. Students interested in reflecting on the role of literature in the practice of ministry as well as those preparing to do further academic study in the field of religion and literature are all welcome. The format of the class will be lecture and discussion.
