Homosexuality and American Churches

Mark D. Jordan

Description

In the last six decades, teaching on homosexuality has changed dramatically in American churches. Whether they condemn homosexuality, tolerate it, or endorse it as equivalent to heterosexuality, churches now talk about it differently than they did -- in their explicitness and emphasis, but most importantly in their preferred scriptural interpretations, their ethical reasoning, their appropriation of scientific or medical evidence, and their pastoral proposals. Using a wide variety of texts from inside and outside the churches, this course will attempt to reconstruct part of the archive of speeches in order to assess the significance for Christian ethics of these ongoing controversies.
