The Social Gospel
Dan McKanan
Description
This seminar will explore religious efforts to promote a just social order in the United States between the end of the Civil War and the beginning of the Great Depression. We will pay particular attention to the interplay between the mainstream social gospel movement (exemplified by Washington Gladden and Walter Rauschenbusch) and the much wider range of social justice movements (Catholic, African American, feminist, theosophical, socialist, Unitarian Universalist) that were active during the same period.
