Unitarian and Universalist History in the United States

Description
This survey course will trace the history of both Unitarianism and Universalism from their eighteenth-century origins to the present. Topics will include the diverse starting points of liberal religion in the United States, the Unitarian controversy at Harvard, Transcendentalism and social reform in the mid-nineteenth century, the challenges of free religion and religious humanism, tensions between Boston Unitarianism and the rest of the country, the movement of liberal religion beyond its Protestant roots, merger and growth in the middle of the twentieth century, the Black Empowerment struggle, and the ongoing interplay between Unitarian Universalism and other strands of American religion.
