Religious Dimensions in Human Experience

Description
Study of major themes in the history of religions including religious experience, society and cosmic law, ritual violence and the body, the trickster, search for the soul. Readings focus on the tension between personal memoirs and the social construction of religion in Islam, Jewish, Christian, American Indian, African American, and Latino traditions. Introduction to theoretical approaches of M. Jackson, Durkheim, Eliade, Berger, J.Z. Smith, Doniger, and Nandy.
