HDS 3255
Political Emotions and the Religious Imagination
Michael D. Jackson
Description
The recurring phenomenon of violent urban protest (riots in the banlieus of Paris in November 2005; reactions throughout the Islamic world to the Danish cartoons in February 2006) alerts us to urgency of going beyond media representations of the "clash of cultures", and understanding the multiplex conditions, real and imagined, existential and discursive, that find expression in these dramatic events. This course will explore some of the ways in which people at the centre and on the periphery of political power conceptualize and enact difference, and why. Special attention will be given to the political emotions and mythico-religious ideas that are at play in these transnational fields, and the relationship between lived experience and cultural representations.
