Rabbinic Stories and Rabbinic Thought: Seminar
Jonathan Schofer
Description
This course will examine the various ways that late ancient rabbis conveyed their thought through narratives of the sages, accounts of biblical figures, and parables. The central focus will be close readings of specific narratives in Hebrew, with strong consideration of the relation between narrative, biblical exegesis, law, and ethical maxims. Attention will be given to methodological problems that arise as we read narratives as a source for understanding rabbinic ethics and theology. Prerequisite: two years of Biblical Hebrew OR three years of modern Hebrew OR consent of the instructor.
