The Protocol of the Gaze: Seminar
Baber Johansen
Description
This is the first of two seminars to investigate this topic. Who has the right to look at whom and in what way? This question is one of the classical problems of all cultures and societies that acknowledge hierarchical structures and separate the private from the public. Much as other religions, Islam has produced an important corpus of discussions and rules concerning this question. The seminar will examine the links between the rules of the gaze on the one hand, gender and social hierarchy on the other. It will investigate into the construction of public and private spheres and its influence on the way of looking at others. The fall term will follow these debates from the ninth to the twelfth century.
