Teaching Staff
The core of the teaching staff for the Summer Leadership Institute is made
up of Harvard faculty members, but instruction is also provided by clergy and
by business, legal, and community development professionals
from outside the University. This staff, which is subject to change each year,
includes:
William C. Apgar
Lecturer in Public Policy at the Kennedy School of Government and former
Assistant Secretary of Housing/Federal Housing Commissioner at the United
States Department of Housing and Urban Development. His interests include
housing, community development, and urban and regional economic development.
Robert Franklin
President of Morehouse College. Former Professor of Social Ethics at Emory University
and former president of the Interdenominational Theological Center. His interests
include
theology and ethics.

Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham
Victor S. Thomas Professor of History and African and African
American Studies and Chair of the
Department of African and
African American Studies at Harvard. Her interests include the history of the black church as
well as historical and sociological perspectives on African American women.
Christine Letts
Rita E. Hauser Lecturer in the Practice of Philanthropy and Nonprofit
Leadership
Associate Dean for Executive Programs Executive Education at the John F.
Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. Her current interests include managing improvement in
large, complex organizations and management of nonprofit organizations.
Edward H. Marchant
Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government
at Harvard. He is
interested in real estate finance and development, and the financing,
development, and management of affordable
housing.
Laura Morgan Roberts
Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Harvard Business
School. She currently teaches Leadership and Organizational Behavior (LEAD) in
the first year curriculum. Her interests include gender, organizational
behavior, and race and ethnicity.
Howard Stevenson
Sarofim-Rock Professor of Business Administration and Senior Associate Dean
for External Relations at Harvard Business
School. He serves as a director at several corporations as well as a trustee
for a number of foundations and private trusts.
David Thomas
Professor of Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management at
Harvard Business School. He is a noted authority on mentoring, executive
development, and the challenges of creating and effectively managing a diverse
workforce.
Cornel West
Class of 1943 University Professor of Religion at Princeton University and
former Alphonse Fletcher Jr. University Professor at Harvard. His interests include problems
facing the black urban underclass and maintaining an ongoing dialogue between
African Americans and Jews.
Preston Noah Williams
Director of the Summer Leadership Institute and Houghton Research Professor of Theology and Contemporary Change at Harvard Divinity School.
He is interested in social
and economic justice, human rights, and African American
religion.
