Methodist Ordination

United Methodists seeking ordination as elders must include the following courses:

  • Hebrew Bible
  • New Testament
  • Theology
  • Church History
  • “Mission” of the Church in the World
  • Evangelism
  • Worship Liturgy
  • United Methodist Doctrine, Polity and History

United Methodists seeking ordination as deacons may receive a Master of Divinity or a Master’s degree in their work field (i.e. sociology) plus 27 theological study hours.

While CPE is not required for either ordination track, it is recommended. Annual Conferences of the United Methodist Church vary slightly as to recommended experiences and field education. As the Methodist denominational counselor, I will work with each Methodist student and their Annual Conference Board of Ordained Ministry to make certain they are aware of all options.
