Graduate Profile: Rob Friedman, MTS '24

How I've Changed  

HDS afforded me two years to focus on both intellectual and personal growth.  

Intellectually, the courses were bracing and informative. Harvard’s flexibility afforded the chance to take courses at arts and sciences and the law school. 

Personally, the past two years impelled me to reconsider long-held views and to ask myself how best to approach the future. 

Given the fervor of those with opinions often counter to my own, I’ve gained insights into how some members of younger generations see the world. It’s been a rare opportunity to sit in a ringside seat and witness changes in the USA. 

Memorable Moment 

When I took Francis Clooney’s course on “Krishna and Christ," I arrived at school extra early, grabbed a cappuccino, then sat alone in the Sperry Room and reviewed class readings. I loved those two hours. I always sat in the same spot, perusing the materials for that day’s class, and reveling in solitude. 

Message of Thanks  

First, a big thanks to the admissions committee for opening the door for a 63-year-old student. Next, thank you to all teachers and TAs for their wisdom and support. Finally, I thank all of my fellow students for their views, whether we agreed or not. 

What I Hope to Be Remembered By 

Hopefully, I will be remembered as a healthy contributor to class discussions, and as someone who offered opinions candidly but in a respectful manner.
