Profile

Ray A. Hammond is the co-founder and pastor at Bethel AME Church in Boston. He was educated as a physician at Harvard Medical School, and served on the Emergency Medicine staff at the Cape Cod Hospital. He completed his Master of Arts degree in the Study of Religion at Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. In 1988 he founded Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Boston. He has a long history of involvement with youth and community activities. 

Hammond is chairman and co-founder of the Ten Point Coalition, an ecumenical group of Christian clergy and lay leaders working to mobilize the greater Boston community around issues affecting youth; executive director of Bethel's Generation Excel program; chairman of The Boston Foundation; vice president for membership of the Boy Scouts Minuteman Council; Executive Committee member of the Black Ministerial Alliance; trustee of Catholic Charities of Boston, the United Way of Massachusetts Bay, and the Yawkey Foundation; and director for the Boston Globe and Citizens Bank of Massachusetts. 

He has written papers and articles on a range of issues including academic achievement, diversity, and violence prevention. His numerous honors including honorary doctorates from Boston University, Cambridge College, the University of Massachusetts, and Lesley College.
