“Rev. Dr. Monica Sanford & Dr. Giovanna Parmigiani...gave me nudges in the right direction throughout my time at HDS. They are both responsible for helping me to step into my authentic self and reminded me that I can actually do the academia thing.”
How I've Changed
When I entered HDS, no one really mentioned that it is rather common for folks to deconstruct their beliefs. I came to HDS as a Heathen and practitioner of Vajrayana Buddhism. While here, I began to enter into the deep of Heathenry, forming a Heathen Practical Theology. I also realized the ethical disparities that existed between the various identities I held, and Summer 2024 saw me spend much of my time in the UVA CPE Internship wrestling with those disparities. This academic year, I arrived at HDS simply as a Heathen.
Memorable Moment
Stepping into Dr. Parmigiani's “Anthropology of Magick” class, the icebreaker was to mention which Tarot card resonated with you the most. When I said “The Moon” she got this intrigued look on her face. Shortly thereafter, I decided to be open about my Paganism and Chaos Magick practice.
Favorite Class or Professor
Those who are on the Pagan & Magick list know my five favorites. BUT if I had to narrow it down, I would pick two: Rev. Dr. Monica Sanford & Dr. Giovanna Parmigiani. These two gave me nudges in the right direction throughout my time at HDS. They are both responsible for helping me to step into my authentic self and reminded me that I can actually do the academia thing.
Message of Thanks
She is not with me anymore, but I want to thank my Maw-Maw, Dot Sprouse. She is forever linked to my Harvard experience. I knew she was likely to pass when I moved up here. I asked her if she wanted me to come live with her and help out, instead of moving up here. She replied: "Son, they are offering to pay your tuition...If you refuse that, I reckon you ain't as smart as they think you are." So I went. She died February 11, 2023.
What I Hope to Be Remembered By
Two things: my manner of speaking, plain and blunt (no Harvard questions from this guy) & the Odin Hat, the Odin hat is freaking fabulous.
Future Plans
The future is up in the air. I was supposed to be doing a CPE Residency at UVA, however, a couple of weeks ago they sent out the timely notice that the program was canceled. Regardless, I will continue to work on figuring out my style of Chaos Magick and will continue to solidify a structure within the White Raven Kindred. Keep an eye out for the forthcoming WhiteRavenKindred.org
